7 Things to Have in Your Suitcase as a Private Investigator

As an investigator travel is just part of the game. I have personally worked all over Europe with this job. Having a standard for your travel kit is essential and has saved my ass a few times as some things are crucial to be comfortable and maintain everything so here are 8 things to have in your suitcase as a private investigator.

Bag Type

Now, I know the post says suitcase but I use a duffel/sports type bag which is made of durable material (likely polyester) which is water resistant and can be shrunken down if needed.

It has to be able to fit as carry on and so I like this type of bag as I can stuff it into the overhead compartments no problem and be worn (uncomfortably) as a backpack too. The other benefit is that I can really stuff it full when desperate.

Clunky suitcases aren’t the best answer and if you need to maintain a surveillance follow. They become very annoying and can blow your job.

Padded Bags

More commonly known as ‘cable organiser bags’ these are invaluable at protecting your breakables. The leading favourite brand I’m aware of is BUBM bags and we use these to store our cables, our cameras, small other pieces of tech like vehicle trackers and everything else precious to you. One huge benefit is they have amazing designs to keep everything really organised for you.

Power

I’m going to cover three items in this section as they both compliment each other perfectly.

The first one is the 4 gang 10 meter extension cable reel. the one I have is from Tesco and has been with me since around 2009 when I was in the Royal Marines. It has been a bed rock travel item for me and will always be in my luggage.

The next thing is a Multi USB plug. These now come in all shapes and sizes but I would say to get a decent branded one as the fire hazard isn’t worth the risk. These will enable you to charge all of your cameras, radios, trackers etc on one plug.

Lastly, it’s all good to have adapters and extensions but it is essential to have all your cables. I’m talking USB-A, USB-C, Lightening cables et al. Carrying out surveillance burns through so much power daily so everything needs charging daily too. for me I have about 20 cables I keep in my BUMB bag and they live there ready for overnight stays.

Laundry Bag

Again, something from my military days but an essential for me.

A standard issue laundry bag. Shows me exactly where all my dirty laundry is and keeps it separate from my clean clothes. Simple but very effective.

Washbag

Self explanatory but having the basics of a toothbrush, deodorant and shower gel/shampoo etc is a must. Maintaining your personal hygiene will keep you healthy, in a good mental head space and ensure you have longevity to continue on long term task which can run for weeks at a time.

Comfies

Completely a personal one for me. I always keep a set of loose fitting clothing, usually pyjamas in my travel bag because being able to stay comfortable and unwind is crucial after travelling and working away. Don’t forget socks or slippers.. whichever is your preference!

HDMI Cable

To finish off, a HDMI cable is a must! There are work uses sometimes like hooking a camera to a TV yes but the main one is being able to hook up your laptop to stream/play movies or shows as it can be very boring watching TV in a different language. Again, this helps your mental head space and increase your longevity on a task as travelling for long periods can be hard on people.

To finish off

The list above is all what I personally have in my bag which does live in the boot of my car ready to go. It does mean these items are surplus and I have built them up over years so please don’t think these are needed straight away if you’re new to the industry.

After a few jobs you’ll know what you need and don’t need, such as a pillow! I used to think that was essential but it is not, for me at least.

I hope this helps and as always, thanks for reading.
