Security clearance screening

The different levels of background checks

A private investigator has the ability to conduct a wide range of background checks, all of different levels depending on the needs and requirements of the client. In most cases, a PI will not need to look into a person’s background too deeply, but for other instances, especially when it comes to security clearance screening, the background check can delve exceptionally far into someone’s history. So what are the different levels of background checks?

Financial status

These financial checks are usually quite light, but they reveal how good an individual is at paying bills, rent and/or mortgage payments on time. These financial checks are otherwise known as credit checks, and they’re used to determine a number of different things, including, but not limited to:
  • Whether or not you can apply for a mortgage
  • Whether you’ll be accepted as a tenant on a rental property
  • Whether or not you can apply for a credit card
  • Whether not you’ll have bank loans accepted
  • Whether or not you’ll be able to pay for items on finance, such as cars, sofas, fridges, washing machines etc
These financial checks will also reveal whether or not you owe someone any money and how much it is you owe. As such, any rent arrears will become apparent, together with any unpaid or overdue bills. If you have any debts, these will be uncovered when a financial status check is carried out on you.

Driving records

Where this is no longer a service that private investigation companies provide, driving licence information can still be checked by an employer who requires an employee to regularly drive a vehicle. If you have acquired the prospective employee’s information legitimately, and with their permission, an employer can then run those details through a government-run database.

Reference & employment verification

When looking to hire a new employee, it’s not uncommon for an employer to run background checks on their prospective workers, as previously mentioned. There are a few reasons for this, including finding out if they have a criminal record and if their references are legitimate. Through solid references, an employer would be able to determine whether or not a potential employee has the experience they say they have.
