The Different Types of Background Checks

A highly-experienced, skilled private investigator, such as the ones here at Delta 74 Private Investigations, are able to covertly carry out thorough background checks on companies and individuals whenever you need it.

Uncover Information

Regardless of the reason for having background checks carried out, the sole purpose of one is to uncover specific pieces of information about a person or organisation. These background checks will provide the recipient with relevant, reliable information in order to help them make a decision about a number of things, including, but not limited to:
  • Whether or not to hire a person
  • Who to rent their property out to
  • Whether they should apply for a job at a certain company
  • Whether they should volunteer at an organisation
  • Whether a person is trustworthy enough to work in a particular sector or on a specific project within the business, such as in the defence industry or for government job
Seeing as background checks can be used for a wide number of purposes, there are ones available that are tailored specifically to your individual needs and requirements with each one providing different levels of information depending on the amount you need and the overall relevance of it to your inquiry. So what are the different types of background checks and to what level can they be conducted?

Different types of background checks

As previously mentioned, background checks aren’t a ‘one size fits all’ service. In fact, they’re quite the opposite, especially when you choose Delta 74 Private Investigations to conduct one for you. Depending on what it is you need, a different type of background check will be required, so what’s the difference between them?

Pre-employment screening

Before a business hires a new employee, they might well ask for a background check to be conducted on the potential new addition to the team. This is relatively common practice for companies these days and they’re exceptionally easy to organise if you choose the right PI firm, such as Delta 74 Private Investigations.

Pre-employment screenings help a business owner or manager to determine whether or not the prospective recruit is, in fact, right for the job. There are a number of things a background check can tell you when it comes to whether or not you should hire a new employee, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Whether they have the experience they said they have
  • Where they worked previously
  • Whether they have a criminal record
  • How trustworthy and reliable they are
  • Whether they have the qualifications they said they have

Tenant screening

When it comes to renting out their property, landlords often like to make sure that they’re expecting tenants who are reliable and trustworthy, especially when it comes to paying their rent on time and respecting the property they’ll be living in. Tenant screenings are rather commonplace in the rental market these days, usually because the landlord is extremely dependent on the extra income they receive.
Detailed searches can be done to reveal the following information about potential new tenants, including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Their credit history
  • Whether they have a criminal record
  • Past bankruptcies they’ve declared
  • Any known aliases they have
  • Whether they’ve been on the sex offenders register
  • Any eviction judgements that have been made
  • Details on previous disputes or issues that have arisen with previous landlords or letting agencies

Volunteer screening

Volunteer organisations and charities, especially, will want to know whether or not their volunteers have a criminal history or a somewhat suspicious past. This is especially important if the volunteers are to be working with children or vulnerable people. These background checks will uncover whether or not they:
  • Have a criminal record
  • If they are, or ever have been, on the sex offenders register
  • Have any medical issues that you should know about
  • Have any known aliases

Security clearance screening

Certain individuals will need to have security screenings carried out on them for government jobs or any work that requires them to work with classified information. These are popular for companies that have different security clearances for their employees and, often, these background checks will spread to the family of the employee or even to those they live with.

These background checks, as a result, are often far more in depth as it could pose a security threat. It’s in the government’s best interests to make sure that those who are working to protect the country have a clean background. This is especially important for those working in defence, for example.

The different levels of background checks

A private investigator has the ability to conduct a wide range of background checks, all of different levels depending on the needs and requirements of the client. In most cases, a PI will not need to look into a person’s background too deeply, but for other instances, especially when it comes to security clearance screening, the background check can delve exceptionally far into someone’s history. So what are the different levels of background checks?

Financial status

These financial checks are usually quite light, but they reveal how good an individual is at paying bills, rent and/or mortgage payments on time. These financial checks are otherwise known as credit checks, and they’re used to determine a number of different things, including, but not limited to:
  • Whether or not you can apply for a mortgage
  • Whether you’ll be accepted as a tenant on a rental property
  • Whether or not you can apply for a credit card
  • Whether not you’ll have bank loans accepted
  • Whether or not you’ll be able to pay for items on finance, such as cars, sofas, fridges, washing machines etc
These financial checks will also reveal whether or not you owe someone any money and how much it is you owe. As such, any rent arrears will become apparent, together with any unpaid or overdue bills. If you have any debts, these will be uncovered when a financial status check is carried out on you.

Driving records

Where this is no longer a service that private investigation companies provide, driving licence information can still be checked by an employer who requires an employee to regularly drive a vehicle. If you have acquired the prospective employee’s information legitimately, and with their permission, an employer can then run those details through a government-run database.

This will prove whether or not the person can drive the vehicle they say they can, whether they’ve been hit with penalty points or have been disqualified at any point. Check someones driving licence information here.

Reference & employment verification

When looking to hire a new employee, it’s not uncommon for an employer to run background checks on their prospective workers, as previously mentioned. There are a few reasons for this, including finding out if they have a criminal record and if their references are legitimate. Through solid references, an employer would be able to determine whether or not a potential employee has the experience they say they have.

Either the manager, business owner or HR department can make the relevant calls to any references, but you can hire a PI to do this for you in order to save you time and ensure great accuracy. In turn, this will give you complete peace of mind when it comes to bringing new people into the team.

Criminal records

Many businesses will not hire an individual if they have a criminal history. However, it can sometimes depend on the nature and/or severity of the crime committed. But more often than not, an employer would refuse to bring a person on board if they have any kind of criminal record.

Where you could ask your HR department to look into this for you, they will not be able to gather the same level of information that a PI would and so you should always look to a certified firm, such as those at Delta 74 Private Investigations, to carry out criminal history checks for you.

Delta 74 Private Investigations are able to conduct a number of different background checks on your behalf, including spouse background checks, nanny/childminder checks, online dating checks and more.
